Top of the Agenda: North Korea Fires More Missiles
A day after provoking international outrage by conducting a nuclear test yesterday, North Korea has reportedly fired two more short-range missiles today (Yonhap). http://m1e.net/
The UN Security Council unanimously condemned North Korea's test yesterday, saying it represents a clear violation of a resolution passed following the country's 2006 test (Reuters). http://m1e.net/
The reprimand is nonbinding, however, and it remains to be seen what policy changes, if any, will come in the wake of the test. The New York Times reports U.S. President Barack Obama is inclined to react more sharply than the United States did in 2006, but that his options could be limited due to resistance of tough sanctions by China and Russia. http://m1e.net/

AUSTRALIA: The Australian reports a bullish attitude toward Australian mining stocks has pushed up equities across Australian markets. http://m1e.net/

Pakistan's supreme court reversed a ruling barring former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his brother, who head up one of the country's largest political parties, from holding political office (The News). http://m1e.net/
Rights groups said a curfew being imposed in Pakistan's Swat Valley risks leading to a humanitarian catastrophe by trapping civilians in need of aid (al-Jazeera)

AFRICA: Nigeria Oil Violence
Militants in southern Nigeria blew up a major pipeline owned by the U.S. oil firm Chevron (This Day). http://m1e.net/
S.AFRICA: The Mail & Guardian reports South Africa's economy has officially entered recession following a quarter in which the country's economy shrank 6.4 percent. http://m1e.net/
AMERICAS: Brazil's Floods
The BBC reports over 400,000 people remain unable to return home following major flooding in Brazil that started last month. http://m1e.net/
VENEZUELA: The AP reports the Venezuelan government's efforts to seize and forcibly revitalize some of the country's farms have shown little progress. http://m1e.net/
