Review UN Charter . Sign for it !

                                                                                                       New York, may 4 2009

Dear Friends,

Honoring the past "Earth Day", I write to you about an important need for us to act on behalf of our planet for the protection of the gifts that God has given us.
In this sense , a review of the UN Charter is necessary in order to consider why the UN is not fulfilling its obligations and commitments to preserving our planet.

Introduction

As I mentioned before a few weeks ago, I spoke with Francisco Plancarte in relation to his proposal to transform the UN (1).  He conveyed the great interest showed by the President of the General Assembly, Miguel D'escoto and his team in his proposal.  As a result of this interest, there will be  another meeting  for further discussion on this issue.

Its very clear Miguel D'escoto wants to revigorate the capabilities of the General Assembly (2). In this context, the proposal of Mr. Plancarte shows not only strong perspectives in this direction; it establishes fundamental steps to make the role of the General Assembly more dynamic toward the goal to transform the UN.

My main concern is the short period in which Miguel D'escoto will remain President of the General Assembly.  His term will finish in four months and it is not very clear what is going to happen with the proposal and if it will be considered or not for the next President of the GA.

For that reason, World Alliance for Transforming UN (WAT-UN) (3) consider it necessary for all global civil society organizations to send a clear sign of support and consensus on this initiative to the President of the General Assembly.  It is also imperative to urge him to organize an open forum to discuss with these organizations and diplomatic representatives on the different dimensions of the proposal. This forum would help to analyse the possibility of basic intermediate steps for it's formal implementation through a public process.

This consensus will help to establish the best ground for Miguel D'escoto to move forward in his interest for this vision and establishes a formal documented record in relation to this initiative for the next President of the General Assembly.

The next step will be to send this  letter  to the President of the General Assembly with the signatures of the  representatives of civil society organizations throughout the world showing the support and consensus for the proposal and the interest for a public forum or consultation about this issue at the UN.
